New Pack

DesignDevelopmentB2BCalculator

A paper packaging plant running since 2006 was moving off WordPress, and a wholesale buyer needs one answer: what will my print run cost. We built a B2B site with a server-side calculator and a quote request, and kept the old addresses alive in search.

The task

A buyer wants a ballpark price before talking to a manager; the manager wants a request that already holds every parameter of the run. And moving off WordPress must not wipe out the search positions the site had built up over the years.

How we did it

05 · step

  1. Step 01

    The plant's own price model

The calculator reproduces the plant's own costing model, which the client handed us as a spreadsheet. The server does the maths, and the site and the API share one calculation core, so the figure on screen and in the request cannot drift apart.

  2. Step 02

Prices live in the admin, not in code

Reference tables, coefficients and new product types are edited in the admin without a developer. A draft model can be run in a sandbox before it goes live, and with no published version the site shows no price at all rather than guessing with defaults.

  3. Step 03

A request that carries the order

“Request a quote” sends the manager a contact and the assembled order: size, run, paper, print, handles. The server recalculates the price at the moment of sending, so the manager sees the current figure, not the one left in an open tab.

  4. Step 04

    Moving without losing search

We crawled the old site and mapped permanent 301 redirects: categories, subcategories, products and news each reach their new address in a single hop. Organisation, site and product markup are linked into one graph, so search engines see the manufacturer behind every bag.

  5. Step 05

    The plant speaks in numbers

The design is built on kraft paper and the language of technical labels: every product carries its sizes, paper weights and number of colours, and the home page has a “production passport” with the line's limits, unrounded. To a buyer that says more than adjectives.

The run calculator: nine sizes, runs from 1,000 to 20,000 pieces, three papers, print and handle colour. Next to it is a 3D fitting: the bag turns, changes colour and tries on the buyer's logo, and the logo file never leaves the browser. It is the only 3D on the site, and it earns its place: it helps choose rather than decorates.

What the client keeps

03
01

Everything is edited in the admin

Copy, catalogue, SEO fields and calculator tables are data, not code. The site changes without a developer.

02

A price model with a history

The costing configuration has drafts, a published version and an archive: past calculations are never rewritten, and an earlier version can be brought back.

03

Requests, not “call me back”

The manager receives a ready run specification and the price at the moment it was sent.

Next step

Not sure what you need?

Ari asks four questions — the team comes back with a scope and a price.
