Website or Telegram bot: what a small business should choose

Arevian Studio

A bot is cheaper and ships in a week; a site works for you for years. Which task belongs where — and why you usually need both, in a particular order.

The question sounds like a choice of tools; it is really a choice of how you meet a client. A site is a place someone comes to on their own, and may come back to in a year. A bot is a conversation that starts from your link and lives until the person leaves the chat.

What a bot does better

  • Take a repeating order: menu, booking, delivery
  • Remind — about an appointment, a status, an abandoned cart
  • Collect a short form without a form on a site
  • Work where the person already sits all day

A bot wins on speed: a week or two against a month or two, and several times less to start. But it has a ceiling: search does not find it, ads do not reach it as cheaply, and you cannot show it as proof that the company exists.

What a site does better

  • Answers "who are you and can you be trusted"
  • Brings people from search — for free, for years
  • Shows work, prices and terms the way you decided
  • Takes payment and keeps working without you

A bot is a till and a conversation. A site is an address and a reputation. A till without an address works until the first "who are you, exactly?"

If there is one budget

Start with whatever is closer to money. If you already have a flow of clients writing to messengers, build the bot: it removes the routine and pays back in weeks. If there are no clients yet and you are counting on being found, build the site: a bot with no traffic is a button nobody presses.

The worst move is splitting one budget into half a site and half a bot. You get two unfinished things, each broken for its own reason.

Why you end up needing both

The site brings people in, the bot serves them. An enquiry from the site lands in a chat where the answer takes a minute instead of a day. That is how almost everyone selling a repeating service works: delivery, salon, school, clinic.

The technical side is dull and solvable: one database, one set of statuses, one history. The point is not to run two unconnected systems in which the same client looks like two different people.
